The surfaces of 14 elegant marble anthropomorphic sculptures and other objects from the Early Greek Cycladic collection were examined by conservators to determine whether or not they were decorated with paint. The Greek botanist Theophrastus described its sources and methods of extraction in the fourth century B.C., but there are also significantly earlier Greek objects with traces of cinnabar at The Met. Early Greek Cycladic Sculptures and Other Early CulturesĬinnabar was known to the ancient Greeks. Some believe the color was prized because of its vibrant permanence, which is so unlike the blood it visually resembles. It was also applied to skulls and bones as part of burial rituals in neolithic cultures in Anatolia, China, Galilee, Spain, and Syria, and in many cultures of the ancient Americas. For example, the pigment was used during triumphal processions by Romans. Research shows it has been used at various times and places to denote blood, victory, success, the duality of life and death, and immortality. Until the discovery of cadmium red in the early 20th century, vermilion was the most widely used red pigment around the globe, and the most vibrant red.Īnthropologists have long been interested in the role of cinnabar in rituals and other symbolic activities. But "cinnabar" refers to the mineral, while "vermilion" is the pigment. Cinnabar is also known as "vermilion." The two terms are used interchangeably, by both ancient authors and modern scholars, because chemically the two substances are the same (HgS mercuric sulfide). ![]() Images courtesy of Wikimedia CommonsĬinnabar has been mined and used as a precious resource by many cultures around the globe since at least the 10th millennium B.C. The word most likely comes from the ancient Greek κιννάβαρι kinnabari, later romanized to cinnabaris. I also looked at other digital technologies to see if they can help us reconstruct color based on revealed pigments and provide viewers with an enhanced immersive experience of color. Itai means "painful", with additional senses of "painfully embarrassing" → "cringeworthy", "painful for the wallet" due to the high costs involved, or "painful to look at" (an eyesore). Since then, itasha (as the decorated vehicle) was derived from combining the Japanese words for itai ( 痛い, painful, cringe, embarrassing) and sha ( 車, vehicle). Among them, the "itasha"-originally Japanese slang meaning an imported Italian car-was the most desired. In the 1980s, when Japan was at the zenith of its economic might, there were many luxury import cars in Tokyo. However many of the other forms are very worthwhile garden plants, including forms with colored winter twigs, unusual leaf shapes and ones grown for particularly spectacular or unusual fall coloring. Of the many forms introduced and bred, the most popular are those with red summer leaves those with finely divided leaves and those that are pendulous and cascading. The Japanese name momiji means the hand of a baby. The Swiss botanist and doctor Carl Peter Thunberg named the tree Acer palmatum, because the leaf looked like a hand. In the 19 th century travelers and botanists began to bring trees back from Japan and they quickly became very popular with gardeners in Europe and America. Although some purists only grow original Japanese varieties, many of the best and most popular were developed in the West and have been introduced back into Japan. Many forms were developed in Japan and these of course have Japanese names, while others were bred in Europe or America and usually have English-sounding names. Japanese gardeners began to collect these forms, and produce more from seedlings, so that today at least a thousand different forms are known. Unlike many plants, where each individual is very much the same as another, these trees are naturally very variable, with different leaf-forms, colors and tree shapes. More than an excuse for a picnic, momiji-gari is considered a lofty spiritual experience. The bark is smooth and gray on older limbs, but green, red or sometimes pink on younger shoots. As a wild tree it grows 20-35 feet tall, occasionally more, and usually has several trunks, rather than a single central trunk. Compared with many other trees and shrubs, they have few pests or diseases and are versatile enough to thrive in locations ranging from full shade to full sun. With attention given to their location in the garden and some minimal care, they will thrive and increase in beauty every year. These small trees have a reputation for being hard to grow, but this is largely undeserved. There are also a wide number of varieties with red or purple leaves all summer, which bring a unique highlight to any garden. They may be upright in form, pendulous or cascading, with red or green leaves and as well as their stunning fall coloring, many have remarkable colors on their new, early spring leaves too. Some grow into small trees 20 feet or more in height, others remain as low shrubs reaching five feet only after many years of growth. A tree in fall is guaranteed to turn heads and gather admiring looks and the enormous variety of leaf forms, colors and tree shapes means that no matter what your taste or space restrictions, there will be a tree for you. One of those people, Zabyk, detonated a genetic bomb that stripped away the Skrulls’ ability to shape-shift. With the Empire in disarray, various powerful Skrulls from across the universe asserted their claim on the throne and attempted to crown themselves the next Emperor. Shortly after that confrontation, Emperor Dorrek VII exiled a Skrull religious zealot and doomsayer named Veranke, a key figure in the SECRET INVASION (2008) event. In response, the Skrull captured the Illuminati and experimented on them, which later allowed them to enhance their shape-shifting abilities. One of the team’s first missions saw them threatening Emperor Dorrek VII and telling him not to invade Earth again. In the aftermath to the conflict, a group of Earth’s smartest heroes formed the Illuminati, a secretive organization with the intention of protecting the planet from future incursions. Anelle hid her son on Earth to protect him from the wrath of his grandfather, Emperor Dorrek VII, who did not approve of the child’s heritage. Their child, who was a hybrid of both species, later became known as Teddy Altman, AKA Hulkling, an important member of the Young Avengers. During the war, Kree hero Mar-Vell, AKA Captain Marvel, had a romance with a Skrull princess named Anelle and they became pregnant. The Kree/Skrull War laid the foundation for much of what would come to happen with the Skrull Empire in the future. As the arc progressed, the Skrull set their sights on Earth, and the battle only came to an end when Rick Jones tapped into the powerful Destiny Force. That story saw Ronan the Accuser, leader of the Kree Empire, launching an attack against Earth, which the Skrull took as an opportunity to attack their old foes on Hala. The rivalry between the Skrull and Kree over Earth came to a head in AVENGERS (1963) #89 through issue #97, also known as the “ Avengers: Kree/Skrull War” arc. From there, various Skrull characters, including Kl’rt, frequently fought battles against heroes from Earth. This led to the creation of Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull, who had all the powers of the Fantastic Four. After losing to Marvel’s First Family, Skrull Emperor Dorrek VII began looking into how to give his people super-human abilities. The Fantastic Four’s chicanery didn’t work for long, though. The Fantastic Four later stopped another Skrull invasion and, for a time, tricked the aliens into leaving Earth alone. Still, in the 20th century, a super hero group called First Line thwarted a potential invasion.
